The 78th Frankfurt Book Fair opens on Tuesday evening with Czechia as its guest of honour. Around 70 Czech authors will represent the country over the five days of the fair.1
The Czech presentation runs under the motto "A Country on the Coast", a nod to the Bohemian seacoast in Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale. Singer Iva Bittová will perform at the opening ceremony, and writers Radka Denemarková and Marie Iljašenko will read from their work.1
The details
A pavilion built from air
The guest-of-honour pavilion covers 2,300 square metres and was designed by the Czech studio JinJan. Round inflatable shapes of different sizes divide the space and double as seating. Organisers have planned more than 100 literary and cultural events at the fair and around Frankfurt.2
The Moravian Library in Brno and its Czech Literary Centre are running the programme. The halls open to publishing professionals on Wednesday and to the general public later in the week; the fair closes on Sunday, 11 October.12
Frankfurt has invited a different guest country every year since 1976. Beyond the fair grounds, the Czech programme continues in Frankfurt and in other cities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland over the coming year.2
