Editorial standards
How we choose, check and publish stories.
Last updated 1 October 2026
Sources first
Every story is based on at least one identifiable source: a public body, an organiser, a club, a museum or an established news outlet. We link each source at the end of the article and mark the passage it supports with a numbered note.
Checking
Names, dates, figures and quotes are checked against the original source before publication. If two sources disagree, we say so or we leave the detail out.
Corrections
Factual errors are corrected in the article and a dated note at the end explains what changed. We do not quietly edit published facts.
Independence
Advertising is sold separately from the newsroom and never decides what we cover. Sponsored content, if we ever run it, will be labelled at the top of the page.
Images
Pictures on this site are illustrations and are labelled as such. They show the subject of a story in general terms, not the event itself, unless a credit says otherwise.
Use of software
Our editors write and edit every story. We use software for spelling checks, translation help and to produce illustrative images; an editor reviews every page before it goes live.
What we leave out
We do not cover party politics, election campaigns, crime, court cases or armed conflict. That is a choice about scope, not a judgement about those subjects.
