Five cheetah cubs born at Prague Zoo on 18 June can now be seen by visitors. The four males and one female live with their seven-year-old mother, Daenerys, in an enclosure next to the Carnivore and Reptile Pavilion in the lower part of the zoo.12
The cubs had a difficult start. Their mother unexpectedly gave birth in an outdoor enclosure behind the scenes, the family sat out heavy summer storms, and in early August Daenerys caught an intestinal infection. All five cubs came through, have been vaccinated and dewormed, and now eat solid food.1

A rare success
Curator of mammals Pavel Brandl said in July that when the female arrived from France years ago, weak and nervous, he did not expect her ever to have cubs. Her condition improved after spring 2023.3
The cheetah is one of the most threatened big cats, with only about 7,000 left in the wild, and the number of cheetahs in European zoos has fallen by a quarter since 2020. These are the first cubs raised at Prague Zoo in eight years.3
